My server uptime is back down to zero

July 4, 2003 | Comments (0)

Last monday my electricity supplier decided they needed to cut down the electricity for an hour. As my webserver is not backed by a UPS it went down and came back up when the electricity was back. This ruined my total uptime off 32 days to 11.

I especially installed FreeBSD because that OS is know to be very stable. I like to have it running for years without any restart and also wanna see if its possible to install new software and services without having to restart. This was one of the big pains of WinNT 4. Although I must say that it is going much better with Win2k and WinXP. They don’t seem require much restarts. The same is true for this OS is you have a Laptop. You can run it for weeks in hybernate mode; connect it to different networks and it still runs fine. This was much different for WinNT 4, which was almost useless when installed on a laptop!

And how do you do install upgrades to the OS without rebooting? I feel that a reboot every now and then is a sign that the Administrator is caring for his machine ...
