Nikon D70s

“We are now developing a full range of new models from the top-end to popularly-priced models, but we can’t say anything more now” — Susumu Enomoto

Nikon has not confirmed the existence of another new digital SLR called the D70s, but like the D2Hs it seems a minor upgrade to the current bestseller. It has the same size 6.1mpix sensor as the D70.

Nikon claims to have sold about 1 million D70s globally between March 2003 and this February, and this figure accounts for about 40 percent of the worldwide digital SLR market during that period!

Well, reading the user manual of this new camera these are the only real difference I can see: a new viewfinder eyepiece cup, a remote cord connector and a 2" LCD. So yes, a minor upgrade.

lets hope they made a typo in the manual and that the sensor is actually 8mpix

Something I wrote in a forum some days ago:

Nikon launched the F801 in 1988 as a pro or semipro AF camera. Two years after this, in 1990, they launched the F601, an amateur AF camera. Since some technology is better with every new model, the AF system on the amateur F601 was slightly better than that on the semipro F801. So Nikon launched the F801s in 1991, just the same camera but with a better AF system (and some other minor upgrades).

Something similar happened to the F401 (Nikon launched a F401s two years after) and the F90 (F90s two years after again). There are several F4 versions: F4, F4e and F4s, the same camera with different power sources. And more recently, there is a new version for the D2H called D2Hs.

So as you can see, that final s in a Nikon model just mean one thing: same camera with some minor upgrades. The new D70s is still a D70, it's not the 20D competitor some measurbators were waiting for, it's not a D80, just the same D70. After all, the D70 it's a great camera and the Nikon's best seller (1.000.000 sold in a year), so it doesn't make so much sense to replace it with a new model.

Why a new name and some changes? Maybe a marketing move (right now, the D70 it's in the news again as it will be if the D70s is finally released), or maybe it's just a way to justify a price (companies are dropping prices right now and their margins are smaller, so instead of a cheaper D70 Nikon will be able to sell a D70s at a bigger price due to the new specifications: bigger LCD, cord connector and so). It could also be a way to share some parts with the new D50 (just like the new D2Hs takes some components from the D2X) so they can reduce costs or increase production.

Well, I'm not a Nikon worker or manager so I don't really know why they are planning to release a D70s, but I think it's a good move. I won't buy it just becouse I have a D70 and I am more than happy with it, but if I were to buy a new camera today I would also be happy to see that Nikon it's going to give me more for the same price (D70s at the price of a D70). Of course Nikon need a new semipro model with a better body/autofocus/frame rate/viewfinder (D200? D80/90?) for those who can't afford or don't need a D2X/D2Hs, but in the entry and amateur level, D50 and D70s make sense to me.

Just my thoughts! :D
