A year on a slice

I’ve been now for a year on a slice from SliceHost. After running at home on FreeBSD I decided to switch to external hosting. The primary reason was that I had to switch houses wich meant offline time for the server. I looked at a number of services and decided finally to go with a VPS so I could install everything I wanted and had full control. Slicehost was a good decision sofar. Server didn’t go down a single time to my surprise and almost no maintenance.

One reason for restarts of FreeBSD was the (low) amount of memory. This caused Apache to be thrown out by the OS in cases of panic. This happened more and more after blog-comment spammers found my site and blew up apache/mysql. As I went with a small slice I decided to throw out memory hungry apache and installed nginx by Igor Sysoev. A nifty small and performant webserver. I guess it paid off:
