De Omloop; The yearly island walk

August 23, 2003 | Comments (0)

This year we had the 14th walk around the island Goeree Overflakkee. The walk is called De omloop as that’s dutch for ‘walk around’. The total length is 110 kilometers and you’re allowed to walk for 24 hours. The fastest people do it in 17 hours. The slowest never make it in time or give up long before the end.

Like last year I was asked to be at post #5 to track the walkers. This post is open from 22:15 till 0:30. The barcode of every person passing the post is scanned and uploaded in a batch to the www.omloop.com site. This allows the organisation to track missing people and the family to see where friends are and make estimations about the arival time. You can have a look at the live menu to see the actuals.
More photo’s can be seen on the Omloop site…

Although it's only in Dutch, you can find a report of 'De Omloop' on the RGL FM website (http://www.rgl.nl/omloop). Its mainly focussed on the participants that are from Ouddorp, Goedereede and Stellendam. But it'still interesting...
