Yesterday I had my hands on a D70 for the first time and I must say that I was impressed! After weeks Kees finally got to buy one of these machines.
I could find my way on this machine immediately without figuring how to operate it, including features lay playback and exposure compensation. This is very different from my CoolPix 5700 where you definately need to have read the manual before you understand the more enhanced features and now how to operate the custom settings!
The weight of the camera is fine and probably mostly determined by its lens. The LCD is very bright and can be used to check sharpness. I probably wast most impresse dby the AFS lens. As I have never used such a lens I was struck by its quiet and fast focussing. Als the the build quality seems very good as you won’t feel any uncomfortable margin on the zoom and focus rings.
Have fun Kees! You might have made me jealous!

Drool... :-P=
Yep, I was happy to finally get the Nikon D70. I had to wait for over 7 weeks for the delivery of my Nikon D70 kit (so with the special AF-S DX 18-70 Nikkor zoom objective).
My first experience with this camera is a pleasant one. The camera is very fast, even with a microdrive, and just does what you expect from these semi-professional SLR's. The quality of the pictures is phantastic.
I have to do more tests with the ISO and white balance settings. Taking pictures at low light with no flash and high ISO might result in too much noise. I have to check that.
I did have some problems with the new software that Nikon delivers together with the package. Installation was no problem, but transfering images to the computer with the PictureProject software only works correctly is the D70 is set to its special PTP protocol. A pleasant extra is the availability of a fully functional demo version of Nikon Capture 4.1 on the software cd thats also delivered in the Nikon D70 kit.
I wish I had the possibility to attach an example of a recently made photo.
Kind regards,
